While you're there

Zürich, the largest city of Switzerland

Zürich is a major financial centre and one of the most preferred Swiss destinations. In 2012, it was voted as the best city to live in Europe. It is an elegant metropolis on the lake bearing its name, with views over the snow-covered Alps, home to over 50 museums, 100 galleries, top hotels, shops and restaurants. Obviously it has to be Zürich! With its excellent public transport connections, this prime Swiss destination is ideal for excursions to the rest of the country. 5 days there, and you will get to know all about Zürich and neighbouring towns.

If you are asking yourself where to get a good view of the Zürich skyline, the answer is Grossmünster, the famous tall twin towers. The most notable landmarks of the city are the Fraumünster church decorated by Marc Chagall; the beautiful spires of Saint Peters Church and its monumental clock – Europe’s largest;

At the other side of Lake Zürich, Rapperswill, a small medieval town awaits you with an invitation to visit the Rose Gardens, the Castle, the deer park on the Lindenhof and Switzerland’s largest wooden bridge. Get to know where the famous Lindt & Sprüngli chocolate are made, by stopping over in Kilchberg, on your way back.

There is an excursion which is not to be missed! Thanks to the world’s steepest cogwheel railway, you will reach the top of Mount Pilatus for a splendid panorama view of the surrounding mountains and lakes, before getting back by cable car.

In cosmopolitan Zurich, you can munch on everything. Go to the famous Confiserie Sprüngli to have a taste of their chocolate inventions before going to the Niederdorf area where you can taste the trademark Züri Gschnetzlets dish veal in cream and mushroom sauce) and rosti (grated, fried potatoes). The local wines are Riesling, white Rauschling and light red Clevner.

Go to the Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s most exclusive shopping avenues. The old town is also a very attractive shopping area with fashion, jewellery and antiques shops as well as the smaller and more traditional boutiques. Head to Schipfe to find craftsmen who sell their handmade products along the river. Join locals in a spot of ‘lädele’ the pasttime of shopping and strolling. Explore the multicultural Langstrasse quarter where young Swiss designers have set up shop.

Train Station(s)

Trains are a convenient way of reaching many towns and cities throughout Europe. The majority of cities in Europe have a minimum of one train station, while larger, more populated cities have two or more stations. Train stations, in general, are located in the heart of the city. Review the map below to get an idea of where the train station(s) in Zurich can be found.

While trains are the convenient way to travel in Europe, planes are essential for bringing you from overseas. Major European cities are annexed to airports hubs, while important cities or towns are served by regional airports. Zurich is annexed to Switzerland.

  • "highly satisfied"
We were highly satisfied with the services and comfort by travelling with Raileurope.
  • "Night Train to Zurich "
It was a very good experience travelling by the night train from the Vienna to Zurich. The night train started at very late hours around 11.45 pm and we have to wait for it in the train station for a few hours as it was pretty cold at winter now. The train looked a bit old and the the 2 pax sleepers rooms we booked was small. We have 2 big luggages and that already take up most of the space beside the bed and hardly can find any other space. Luckily my husband and I were not fat, we are able to fit into the 2 small beds, 1 in the upper and the other in the lower decker. There is a small basin in the room and it looked old too. By the next morning when we reach Zurich, the scenery outside the train refreshed us a lot. A light breadfast was served to us from the train crew and his look was serious and never smile. I think if the train crew could be a little bit friendly and that could make us feel happier a little. Overall, the night train is not as comfortable as the trains we travelled in the day time.

It was a modern train with over 300Km/Hr speed. Clean and comfortable. On time. Restaurant in the middle car of the train. Space for large suitcases at the end of the car.
  • "Paris to Zurich on TGV 1st Cl"
The trip from Paris to Zurich was uneventful. The train carriage was clean and comfortable, nothing to fault.
  • "TGV"

  • "Zurich to Paris "
Comfortable overall, but could be better if there's more space for luggage
  • "Italy - Swiss Travel Pass Way"
Our trip was nice and smooth. Noise level coming from the other passengers was rather high, though. Appreciate the snacks and drinks provided.
  • "I liked it"
Arrive at the station just 15 minutes before departure, get in the train... sit.... enjoy the scenes and charge your mobile phone... ..... much more easier and more enjoyment than travelling by the damn airplane
  • "Nice Trip"
Ran on time and was very relaxing, be forewarned that if your traveling with larger luggage its a tight fit in storing it.
