Don’t Miss
Just 20 minutes walk from the Pisa Centrale train station, the Piazza dei Miracoli houses the must-see Leaning Tower of Pisa, and Italy’s biggest spherical Baptistry.
Retail Therapy
The Borgo Stretto is the main shopping street, beautified with some fantastically detailed frescoes. On the second weekend of every month the streets around Piazza dei Cavalieri transform into an open market, showing off the best of Pisan food and craft.
Eat and Drink
The Piazza Garibaldi is the main drinking spot – coming alive at night with students and trendies. For a drink with a difference try the Op Art Café, it houses different exhibitions every month from local and international artists and photographers. Like the rest of Italy Pisa is gelato crazy, try the Nutellata at La Bottega del Gelato.
Hidden Gem
Keith Haring’s last public work, his 1989 ‘Tuttomondo’ mural, is free to view on the side of the Church of St Anthony. Visit the intimate Santa Maria della Spina Church on the banks of the River Arno, it was built to house a thorn (spina) believed to belong to Jesus’ crown.
Day Trip
Florence is only an hour’s train ride away, and the station puts you right in the centre of the action. See paintings by Botticelli, Goya and Caravaggio at the Uffizzi Gallery, enjoy shopping on the famous Ponte Vecchio and marvel at the architecture of the Duomo façade.
